It was composed of four guns of 152 mm calibre, capable of firing shells to a maximum range of 15 miles, allowing them to reach not only Omaha Beach, 8 miles to the west, but also the British landing zone of Gold Beach, 5 miles to the east. The Allies had tried to knock out this battery with aerial bombardment leading up to the landings, but it was not until D-Day itself that the guns were finally silenced by the off-shore Allied Navies. The damage inflicted on the guns themselves can still clearly be seen today.

With two and a half million visitors a year, Mont Saint Michel is undoubtedly Normandy's most spectacular attraction. The abbey traces its roots back to 708 A.D. As the centuries went by, buildings were added and enlarged, using the different architectural styles of the time and resulting in the enchanting abbey and monastery we admire today.

You'll have free time to take a walk around the fascinating World Heritage'listed island. Perhaps you'd like to take a wander along Mont Saint Michel's narrow streets, browse the shops on the main street, visit the island's museums or take a walk around the abbey's ramparts, with views over the sands of the bay.

Next, it's on to the old town of Saint Malo. You'll drift back in time as you walk through streets ringed by high fortified walls. The spectacular views of the port and bay look just as they were when 16th-century explorers such as Jacques Cartier, who discovered Newfoundland, would have seen them.
Perhaps you'd like to try one of the creperies, much loved by the locals, where you will find the regional specialty, a galette bretonne. Or try the numerous seafood restaurants where you can sample the fishermen's catch, freshly caught that morning.

You will see Pegasus Bridge and its sister bridge site for one of the most complete and successful operation carried out on D-Day. It was vital for these bridges to be captured intact in order to deny the Germans a crossing point over the Orne river and canal, which together run parallel to the sea from Caen. The paratroopers held their position despite numerous enemy counter-attacks until they were joined by British troops advancing south from Sword Beach just after midday on D-Day.

Visit Sword beach where 28,000 soldiers including 177 Free French soldiers, came ashore to start the liberation of Western Europe. They were the only French soldiers to be involved in the assaults on D-Day.

Next on to the Merville Battery Museum. The men of the 6th British Airborne Division under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Otway were tasked with the capture and destruction of the guns strategically situated to fire on the landings taking place three miles further west on Sword Beach. These men were missing equipment, ammunition and lacked communications. Also, despite the reinforcements that were meant to arrive during the attack not turning up, this small group of determined British soldiers managed to succeed in their D-Day mission, and this gun battery today remains as a museum to the testament of the courage of these men.

Many of Iceland's biggest glacier rivers run into the Atlantic Ocean on the country's southern shore. Just before you reach the lagoon, you'll pass Iceland's biggest volcano, Oraefajokull glacier, which also has the highest peak of the island, Hvannadalshnjukur, at 6950 feet (2119 meters).

At the lagoon you will have time to view this stunning area before taking a boat ride. But these are no ordinary boats! They are capable of driving short distances as well as sailing on water - something quite unique!

Jokulsarlon lagoon started to form in the early 1920s, and is growing bigger every year. You will see blocks of ice that have broken off Europe's biggest glacier, Vatnajokull, and are sailing slowly towards the ocean, which is only a mile away. Some of the icebergs are partially covered with volcanic ash from ancient eruptions, and look like sculptures, made by Mother Nature herself!

First stop is the Thingvellir National Park, which has a special place in the hearts of Icelanders for its historical importance and geological uniqueness. It was here that Iceland's first Parliament was founded in 930AD and the views from here over Iceland's rough terrain are stunning.

Thorsmork is a narrow valley situated between three glaciers named Myrdals, Eyjafjalla and Tindafjallajokull. Porsmork was a fjord some 12,000 years ago (as your guide will explain) and the outlet glaciers tumble and crawl down into the gullies, some of them ending in spectacular glacial lagoons. The glacial melt-off forms rivers, all have to be crossed on the way into Thorsmork. Some days the crossing is challenging - an innocent stream can change in a matter of hours to a thunderous torrent. Skilled drivers are very experienced in these driving conditions. As you enter the caves through a narrow entrance, you will be struck by an extraordinary scene of colors and lava formations. These beautiful natural phenomenons were created when surface lava hardened and the fluid lava continued to flow in tubes underneath.

Your tour continues toward the west and past Iceland's most infamous and active volcano, Hekla, which during the Middle Ages was believed to be the gateway to Hell. There are splendid views around Slea Head, especially of the Blasket Islands and the scattered rocks, all part of an exploded volcanic area.

In the storms of September 1588 four ships of the Spanish Armada were driven through the Blasket Sound. One, due to great seamanship, got into shelter, followed by a second. But a third came flying through the Sound with its sails in tatters and crashed onto the two other ships, which eventually got to back Spain.

The Great Blasket island, evacuated in the 1950's, produced a number of books in Irish - a best-seller, translated as 20 Years A Growing by Maurice O' Sullivan, and a masterpiece, The Island man by Thomas O'Crohan. In this century some 60 books, mostly in Irish, have been written in the immediate area.

This is also the countryside in which the David Lean film, Ryan's Daughter, was mainly made. The film Far and Away was also made here.

On his visit to Dallas on 22 November, 1963, President John F. Kennedy rode in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza on his way to the Dallas Trade Mart. In the presidential car with Kennedy were his wife Jacqueline, Texas Governor John Connally, and his wife Nellie. Hundreds of well-wishers were scattered throughout the Plaza. Nellie Connally's last words to Kennedy, "Mr. President, you can't say Dallas doesn't love you!" reflected the sentiment of the crowd.

Suddenly, at 12:30pm, after the motorcade turned from Houston Street onto Elm Street, shots were fired, killing President Kennedy and wounding Governor Connally. Bob Jackson, a Dallas Times Herald photographer, was in a press car in motorcade, eight cars behind the President. After he heard a third shot, Jackson looked up and spotted a rifle at a sixth-floor corner window in the Texas School Book Depository building.

The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza is an educational and permanent historic exhibit that examines the life, times, death and legacy of President John F. Kennedy within the context of American history. The museum's exhibition area uses historic films, photographs, artifacts and interpretive displays to document the events of the assassination, the findings of the official investigations that followed and the historical legacy of that national tragedy.

The Kennedy assassination remains one of the most significant events in American history and the assassination site is the most visited historic site in North Texas. Departing from Pelican Marina aboard the catamaran Lambada, you'll sail up the west coast of St. Martin to Plum Point, then across the channel to Anguilla. The Upper Garden, located between the St. Petersburg highway and the Grand Palace, is a typical French-style formal garden with five fountains including one depicting Neptune, the God of the Sea. The estate's Lower Park lies between the Grand Palace and the seashore and boasts the world's largest system of fountains, earning it the title the "Russian Versaille". The park's unique fountain system was designed in the 18th century and doesn't require the use of any pumps to operate the fountains.

There are three major cascades and over 140 fountains in the park. The most impressive is the Grand Cascade, located directly below the Grand Palace and featuring an impressive golden statue of Samson grasping the mighty jaws of the lion. The park's other cascades feature black and white chess board designs, Chinese dragons and numerous other features are definitely worth seeing!

Visit the presidential residence at Bessastadir built between 1761 and 1766 and home to Iceland's President. Perlan

In Reykjavik you'll go to restaurant Perlan, which is built on water tanks that hold the city's hot water supply. Here you can enjoy the spectacular view over Reykjavik and its surroundings.

Hofdi House

Explore Hofdi house where the all-important summit between President Ronald Reagan and Secretary General Mikhail Gorbachev took place in 1986. You will visit the Hallgrimskirkja church, one of the tallest structures in Iceland, the University area and the old town centre where the Icelandic parliament Althingi and the town hall are situated.

Laugardalur

Named the 'Unspoiled Queen', Saba is an eco paradise and quite the getaway for avid divers, hikers and nature enthusiasts. She is as beautiful on top as she is underneath. The journey is 75-90 minutes, and docks in Fort Bay, the only proper access to the sea on Saba. Saba is sheer cliffs on all sides, and even the old slave path still remains where goods were offloaded for transport to the villages by donkey.

Taxis meet the passengers at the boat and tour up into the island. First stop is a village called the Bottom, on up to Windwardside, where the trails start for hiking and tours continue over through Hells Gate with a look down to the airport, precariously balanced out on a lava overflow. Taxi tours are the only way to get up and into the island as the walk up from Fort Bay to The Bottom is vertical and strenuous. The views are spectacular. Drivers will stop at places of interest to take photos, and will let hikers out at the trail with arrangements to meet them for the return journey to Fort Bay.

The hiking in Saba's rainforest is not to be missed with the main trail, Mt. Scenery, being the most popular. It is possible to stop at any point and return to Windwardside, or challenge the climb for the views from the top. The Saba Trail Shop asks a US$3 donation for the trail upkeep, and guests receive a trail badge. Windwardside boasts great little restaurants for lunch. There are a few shops selling local crafts such as hand blown glass jewelry, and artwork. The villages are quaint with low built cottages all whitewashed with red and green roofs, tiny narrow roads and very friendly locals.

Saba is very unspoiled and a refreshing change from the cosmopolitan hustle and bustle that St. Martin and St. Barts provide.

Next stop is the Canadian Cemetery near the villages of Beny-sur-Mer and Reviers, next to where the 3rd Canadian Division landed. Over 2000 Canadian, British and French soldiers are buried here, they paid with their life in the fight for Liberty.

Last stop on this tour is Ardenne Abbey, a masterpiece of architectural design dating from the 12th century. In the early years of the German occupation, the abbey was a focal point for the local French Resistance. Its unfortunate reputation nowadays, however, is as the site of execution of Canadian prisoners of war by the child soldiers of the Hitler Youth Division.

In the afternoon, your tour continues with the Gulfoss and Geysir Express half-day trip. As the Ministry of Jordan does not allow a driver to also be a guide, a guide is not included in the cost of your tour. Your driver will be very informative and be able to point out and explain sites as you drive past. From St. Martin, take this half day snorkeling excursion to the rock formation, Creole Rock. Creole Rock is a large rock formation with a reef extending out towards to the mainland, about a mile offshore. Waters are shallow and calm and provide excellent snorkeling. The boat picks up a mooring in a large sandy patch, in about 8 feet (2.4 meters) of water.

The shallow water, while being great for diving, offers great chances of seeing the rare frogfish, puffer fish, occasional barracuda and many different varieties of reef fish. Divers are welcome, however they must bring their own equipment.

A large cooler keeps beers and sodas ice cold for refreshment throughout the day and bread and cheese are served to hungry snorkelers. Guests should bring towels, hats, sun block and bathing suits. Underwater cameras are on sale in our boutique for those who wish to capture the beauty of the underwater world!

Non swimmers are also welcome to share in the enjoyable boat ride with great views of Anguilla from Creole Rock.

Your boat takes you to the Royal Palace where you can watch the changing of the guard all year round. At the Nybroviken terminal you can take another boat to Fjaderholmarna and Djurgarden. From here it's a short walk to the shopping district. If you have your mind set on history, you don't want to miss the Vasa museum and Nordiska Museum.

Have a good time at the classic amusement park Grona Lund or visit Skansen with its variety of traditional buildings and wild animals. Historic buildings are also to be found in Gamla stan. Even though they were built during the 17th and 18th century they are very well preserved.

The afternoon tour begins with a visit to Thingvellir, a geologically unique place where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. The Icelandic parliament Alpingi was established here in 930, and in 2004 Thingvellir was added to UNESCO's World Heritage List.

You will Sail around Oslo harbour and the inner part of the Oslo Fjord, one of the most picturesque parts of the island. Then you can admire the beautiful green hills surrounding the city as you sail towards the ancient fortress of Akershus, which was used to protect Oslo from sea attacks.
